Chance Foundation concluded 2018 with its 4th annual fundraiser show, titled, ‘Miley Sur Mera Tumhara- Unity in Melody’ on December 8th, 2018. The much-anticipated event addressed the issues of identity and belonging, while showcasing the rich musical and dance traditions of India. Performed by an ensemble cast of nearly 90 actors, singers, and dancers drawn from the local community, and supported by dedicated backstage, event marketing and logistics teams, the show was culmination of a months-long concerted effort.
The event generated a positive and enthusiastic response from the near capacity crowd of 500. For first generation immigrants in the audience, it was a nostalgic journey back to their motherland, and a reassessment of questions of identity both in the land of their birth and in their adopted home. For American-born in the audience, the show was a glimpse into the heterogeneous, rich cultural mosaic of India. Community enthusiasm for this project was commendable, with volunteers enriching the event day by lending their talents, for example, by doing Rangoli art at site or baking the elaborate India-themed cake. While occasional unexpected post-show snafus caused some inconvenience, most attendees took it in their stride. All organizing team members were truly humbled by the effusive praise and by recognition of the hard work and thousands of volunteer hours put in for pulling off a successful show.
The stupendous success of the show was reflected in the new outreach and in the funds raised through the process. 8 new members joined Chance Foundation on the day of the show, and the event raised a substantial proportion of its annual operating budget.
The event was a salute to the generous spirit of the audience and the sponsors whose support made the show possible, as well to the entire team of volunteers, performers and Chance Foundation family members, who poured their hearts and souls into this project. Chance Foundation would express its utmost gratitude to all of them, and ensure that each and every dollar raised goes a long way in furthering our common goal of empowering children.
